"Memory, Responsibility and Future" Foundation

Logo of the "Memory, Responsibility and Future" Foundation

The foundation "Memory, Responsibility and Future" (EVZ Foundation) was established in 2000 with the task of paying compensation to people who were forced labourers under the National Socialist regime. The foundation capital, originally €5.2 billion, was provided by the German state and German business. The payment programmes were completed in 2007. The EVZ Foundation was provided with a basic capital of €358 million to fund its ongoing activities. Since then, the EVZ Foundation has used its revenues to support projects in the following areas:

  • examining history,
  • supporting human rights activities and
  • showing commitment to the victims of National Socialism.

In this way, the Foundation is aiming, through the projects it sponsors, to anchor the history of National Socialist forced labour in the memory culture of Germany and Europe. Furthermore, the awareness of Jewish contributions to German and European history is to be strengthened.

In addition, human rights education projects are supported in combination with historic learning. In Central and Eastern Europe in particular, the Foundation is committed to anti-Semitism, antigypsyism and the concerns of minorities. To support the Sinti und Roma peoples, it funds educational projects and awards bursaries.

The Foundation also supports initiatives in Central and Eastern Europe and Israel that strengthen the willingness to help victims of forced labour and other NS injustices. It funds pilot projects for appropriate social and medical support and to promote a dialogue between generations.

Since its establishment, the "Memory, Responsibility and Future" foundation has provided a total of €87.8 million to fund 3,357 projects (position on 31.12.2013).
