Logo of the Federal Office for Political Education

Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) works with a country-wide network of state offices, educational facilities and education providers to provide political education and culture on an independent, non-party basis.

At the heart of the work of the Federal Agency for Civic Education lies the promotion of an awareness of democracy and political participation. It picks up topical and historic themes through events, printed materials and audiovisual and online products. bpb event formats include conferences, congresses, festivals, trade fairs, exhibitions, study trips, competitions, cinema seminars and cultural events plus publicity events and training courses for journalists. The broadly based range of educational services offered by the bpb aims to motivate and enable citizens to examine political and social questions critically and play an active part in political life.

Website of the Federal Agency for Civic Education

Because of its experiences with dictatorial forms of government in its past, the Federal Republic of Germany has a particular responsibility for consolidating values such as democracy, pluralism and tolerance in the consciousness of its population. In 2012, the bpb celebrated 60 years of its existence. The widely varying educational services offered by the bpb provide insights into the historic and social interactions within political, cultural, social and economic processes. It carries out its work on its own socio-political, educational and journalistic responsibility. It is independent of any political party and scientifically balanced. As a state constituted political educational facility, it also supports the events of more than 400 recognised educational facilities, foundations and non-governmental organisations which work in political education in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The bpb offers special services for teachers and others working in education, training and youth work. It directly addresses adolescents and young adults using approaches and media appropriate to their age. It prepares specific media packages and training courses for young adults in sporting associations, the Army or the Police. In a mass-media society, the bpb makes use of modern communication methods and pursues a cross-media approach. It meets requirements for rapid, reliable information. Through its educational services and special online products, it examines current social and political events and debates. Any citizens who are interested can therefore obtain comprehensive information from the bpb.
